Written by Daniel Suarez and narrated by Jeff Gurner
Review: I selected this audiobook based off of a recommendation from some guy on twitter. He was pretty pumped about this book so I looked it up and decided to give it a try. I found Daemon to be very intriguing right from the start with it’s unique usage of an intentionally “computer generated” type female voice that delivered news throughout the book.
Jeff Gurner turned in an excellent performance. This was the second book that I had listened to that was narrated by Jeff Gurner. The first was “The Keep” by Jennifer Egan. So I had pretty high expectations. Gurner did not disappoint. His narration was spot on.
This book was very tech savy. Not once did I have to sneer at the author’s limited knowledge of tech and internet related material. If anything I found myself rereading passages in order to fully grasp the complexity of the trap that was laid by the antagonist Matthew Sobol.
If you are into tech, the internet and gaming I would highly recommend this book. However I feel like I should warn you that there is a very graphic rape scene early on in the book. Other reviewers had difficulty getting past this scene and simply stopped listening. Unfortunately all to often rape is depicted in books and movies. In this case I know that the purpose of this scene was to illustrate just how despicable the man performing the act is but I feel like the same effect could have been gained from a much less graphic depiction of the act.
So if you feel like you can get past this part of the book then I believe you will thoroughly enjoy the remainder of the book as well as the sequel “Freedom”.
