Ok, so I admit it. I’m a bit of an audiobook nerd. Maybe a nerd in general would be a more accurate description.
At the end of every year I have always had regrets when I can’t recall all the books that I have read over the course of the year. So instead of feeling the same way in 2010 I decided to do something about it.
Basically, I began this list just to track of the number of audiobooks I’ve listend to in a year and the total hrs of audiobooks I’ve consumed. As the list has grown though it is becoming more and more interesting.. to me at least!
One of the most interesting stats is the total hrs of audiobooks consumed = 685 hrs! That is over 28 full days! That seems like an awful lot to me but I’m sure there are people out there that could crush my totals. (Most of those hours were spent on long commutes, mowing the lawn or doing other chores around the house)
Do you keep a similar list? How do your totals stack up?
[table id=1 /]
I’ve listened to a few more than you 49 audiobooks out of 112 books read so far this year. I’ll have to remember to keep track of hours next year. I’ve only listened to 3 on your list but may have to listen to those Jim Butcher ones they must be good since you’ve listened to so many!
I keep an excel spreadsheet which contains a list of titles on-deck (titles I have; but haven’t queued up yet,) challenges I’ve committed to (helps to organize some of those titles on-deck,) titles I’ve listened to and, the hours I’ve logged in. I love your idea of posting the table to your blog (instead of just listing) and I’ll think I’ll do something similar for my blog at the end of the year.
Checking out my own list, I’ve listened to 43 audiobooks/439.95 recorded hours this year so far. In 2009, I listened to 52 audiobooks for a total of 493.35 recorded hours. Hmmm, it looks like I’m not going to meet or beat those totals this year. Ugh, I just checked and my print reading is way down too (only 34 books this year.) I usually hit a combined total of around 100 titles a year; but at this rate the only way I’m gonna make that number is to stock up on graphic novels (Can you say “Fables Read-a-thon,” boys and girls? “Hellboy Cram?”)
Anyway, of course I had to compare your book list to mine:-/
Books we both have listened to: Crush It! (written and narrated by Gary Vaynerchuk,) Fool Moon (Dresden Files #2 by Jim Butcher; narrated by James Marsters,) Grave Peril (Dresden Files #3 by Jim Butcher; narrated by James Marsters,) Summer Knight (Dresden Files #4 by Jim Butcher; narrated by James Marsters,) The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (by Steig Larsson; narrated by Simon Vance,) Matterhorn (by Karl Marlantes; narrated by Bronson Pinchot,) Paul is Undead (by Alan Goldsher; narrated by Simon Vance,) Amityville Horror (by Jay Anson; narrated by Ray Porter) and Dead I Well May Be (by Adrian McKinty; narrated by Gerard Doyle.)
I definitely want to hit up Boneshaker (by Cherie Priest; narrated by Wil Wheaton and Kate Reading;) Blood Oath (by Christopher Farnsworth; narrated by Bronson Pinchot) and, IT (by Stephen King; narrated by Steven Weber.)
Right now I’m listening to The Reapers are the Angels (by Alden Bell; narrated by Tai Sammons.) Comparisons have been made between Flannery O’Connor and Alden Bell; but as I have not read any Flannery O’Connor (hangs head in shame) I don’t know if this is true or not. I do know, however, that the writing is mesmerizing and beautifully wrought even though the subject matter is gory, like dancing with a corpse. The story as set up so far is about a fully human survivor in a zombie world. Shades of I AM LEGEND (by Richard Matheson ) come to mind; but it’s much more than that, with its Southern Gothic writing style and the sense I’m listening to lit-fic rather than SFF or pulp.
What a great idea! I never thought to keep track of hours. I just started tracking this year. Thanks and Happy Listening!
