My Review: Lost Voices is the first audiobook in The Lost Voices Trilogy by Sarah Porter. Sarah is an excellent writer and tells the story of Luce, a troubled 14-year-old girl. Luce’s mother had died and her father was lost at sea a year ago. Now, Luce lives with her alcoholic uncle in Alaska and floats through her day to day life by trying to blend in or stay in the shadows. She knows what her uncle is like when he’s had a few too many to drink and she’d rather just hide from him. On her fourteenth birthday Luce’s uncle attempts to rape her and leaves her for dead. Laying in that spot, next to a large cliff, she begins to daydream.
That’s when things got a little sketchy for me. Luce’s transformation into a mermaid was confusing to say the least. The story seemed to wrap itself in and out of circles and left me wondering what the heck was going on. For me, the story went downhill from there.
Luce is rescued by other mermaids and is taken to live in their cave where she becomes one of their tribe members. But these mermaids aren’t like Ariel from the Little Mermaid. These are evil, murdering mermaids.
Let me finish this review by saying I hate giving bad reviews. To be honest, no, I didn’t like this book, but that’s only my opinion. Maybe it was out of my age range or just not my taste, I’m not sure. I’m thinking this would be a good audiobook for a girl around the age of 16-18. It really wasn’t my style.
Narrator Review: Julia Whelan did a great job! She really surprised me with her different voices. From her narration, she sounds so youthful but managed to pull of men’s voices without a hitch.
