My Review: Dead by Midnight is book one in The Dead By Trilogy and was a great listen that kept me on my toes the entire duration of the audiobook. I bounced between characters with the narrator and found myself changing my mind on who the killer could be more than once.
The “Midnight Killer” is a sly, smart and somewhat wealthy person to have the means to murder a handful of people. He taunts his victims for months prior to their death with anonymous letters that leave them trembling every night.
The majority of this audiobook is centered around Lorie Hammonds and Mike Birkett. Lorie and Mike were high school sweethearts until Lorie left town to make it big as an actress. The decision to become an actress years ago has added Lorie’s name to the killer’s list. She’s moved back home to Dunmore, Alabama but her past has followed her… and Mike.
My one and only critisism of this audiobook was that the beginning was so confusing. There are so many characters to keep straight! Who knows who, who did what, who was married to who, who works where… Whew! By mid-audiobook, things are much easier and you can keep up with all the suspense and character histories.
I love how the killer isn’t completely revealed until the final chapters and that kept me wondering “who done it”.
Narrator Review: Karen White was an excellent narrator for Dead by Midnight. With so many characters and scenes, White rolled with the punches. She expressed real anger, fright and intent in her voices and I enjoyed her performance.
So glad you enjoyed it! The last of the three was my favorite (thought they’re all a bit gruesome!)
